Challenge ahead: 2013 TBR Pile challenge

Adam at RoofBeamReader is hosting the fourth annual “TBR Pile Challenge.” Like many bibliophiles, I have an immense stack of books that remain in my bookshelves, waiting patiently for their turn - only to realise that yet another "new" book has cut in and taken their place in the reading order...

The Goal: To finally read 12 books from my “to be read” pile - within 12 months.

My intentions:

Travels with my aunt - Graham Greene
By Nightfall - Michael Cunningham

The Upright Piano Player  - David Abbot
My TBR pile for this challenge
(there are more, obviously...)
The Breaking of Eggs - Jim Powell
(I bought these two after watching a BBC programme on new writers in March 2011 - I wonder where the authors are now...)
The Eyre Affair - Jasper Fforde
The Hare with Amber Eyes - Edmund De Waal
(and these two were because of rave reviews from other bloggers - it's high time I recorded MY thoughts!)
The Lathe of Heaven - Ursula Le Guin
The Infernal World of Branwell Brontë - Daphne Du Maurier
The Yacoubian Building - Alaa Al Aswany
L’élégance du hérisson - Muriel Barbery
A literature of their own - Elaine Showalter
The vanishing Act of Esme Lennox - Maggie O'Farrell

Alternates
Sophie's world -  J. Gaarder (in Greek)
The Taste of Sorrow - Jude Morgan

  1. Wow...Sophie's World in Greek? That's a challenging book indeed, I've read once but was still confused, so I think I'll try again in the next years. Another Gaarder, The Orange Girl, is on my TBR challenge list, by the way.

    1. Given that the original of Sophie's world is in Norwegian, any other language will be difficult to really capture the meaning... I hope it's not that bad? Great that we read non-English authors, they need their place in literature! Enjoy the challenge!

  2. Sophie's World in Greek... Reason #64673 why I <3 you.

I LOVE this challenge. I've been thinking about 2013 challenges carefully because I did get a little sign-up happy this time last year! Whatever I end up signing up for, I will certainly join in with this one. Definitely one of the best ones out there. I'm not going for 50 books, though, not like 2012! :)

    1. I was also signup happy - but the lists provide so much material I would otherwise never have thought of, I really like them! Come on, join the challenge so that we keep track of each other's progress!

  3. I've only read two of these - One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (twice) and The Eyre Affair. They're both very good! The Eyre Affair was witty and super fun for avid readers, particularly those familiar with Jane Eyre and other classics. One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest is funny in its way, but it's also quite profound. It doesn't read like a "serious" book, because it's somewhat simple, but there's much more there than the prose and language would lead you to believe. I just read it for the second time a couple of months ago.

The rest - no idea! Looking forward to seeing what you have to say and to reading what they're all about. Maybe more books will make it onto my pile (this inevitably happens every year).

    Good Luck!

    1. I''ve found too that I add books that I read from other people's lists. That's the fun of such challenges! Thanks Adam!

  4. I so need to join a challenge like this one! I'm really bad at committing to specific books right now though...

  5. This would be the ideal challenge if I decided to go for challenges again this year.

I loved The Eyre Affair, I'm sure you'll have fun with it too!

The Eyre Affair is one my list too! I've been meaning to read it for years. I hope we both enjoy it!
